Himachal & Uttarakhand — sacred sources of the Ganga.
Twelve plates across two states — Spiti's ochre Tibetan canyons (Kaza, Dhankar, Tabo, Key, Komic, the world's highest village); the Char Dham at Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath; Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib; Kumaon's quiet ridges (Munsiyari, Binsar, Pindari glacier, Roopkund); the Kullu and Manali Beas; Dharamshala and the Dalai Lama's Tsuglagkhang; the apple orchards of Shimla and Kotgarh. Char Dham helicopters, Spiti Innova permits, all arranged.
When does Char Dham open and close?
The four shrines open in late April / early May (Akshaya Tritiya), close in October / early November (Diwali / Bhai Dooj). Yamunotri and Gangotri open first; Kedarnath and Badrinath follow. Helicopter darshan from Dehradun is available throughout the season for those wanting the shorter route.
Is Spiti accessible all year?
Lower Spiti (Kaza, Tabo, Dhankar, Key) is accessible May to October via Manali-Rohtang-Kunzum, and year-round (weather permitting) via Kinnaur-Reckong Peo from Shimla. Upper Spiti and Komic close December-March. Winter Spiti is otherworldly but only for the prepared.
When does Valley of Flowers bloom?
Mid-July through September. Peak bloom is late July to mid-August (after the monsoon's first wash, before the brown). The trek requires moderate fitness and starts from Govindghat near Joshimath.
Do I need permits for Spiti?
Indians do not need permits for Lankeshir Spiti. Foreigners need an Inner Line Permit if entering via the Kinnaur side (Sumdo) or beyond Tabo. We arrange both at Reckong Peo or Kaza.
