What an itinerary really is

Q: How do you compose an itinerary?

We listen first. We ask what drew you to the mountains, what pace feels right, what you actually want to experience. Then we design a sequence of encounters — not a list of boxes to tick, but moments arranged so that each one deepens the next.

Q: Do you have set itineraries?

No. Every journey is composed for the people taking it. We have signature regions and routes, but no two itineraries are identical.

An itinerary is not a list of things to do. An itinerary is a sequence of attention. We built one recently for a couple from Berlin — I will anonymize them here, though they would not mind being named. They had asked for two weeks. They were academics, both in their fifties, married for thirty years, and they had written to us asking for an itinerary that was not driven by photography or by achievement. They wanted to know the places, not to collect them. We began in Srinagar, naturally, in a houseboat at the far end of Dal Lake where the city noise dissolves. The first days are not demanding. You move slowly. You sit. You move to a shikara — a wooden boat — and you drift, and as you drift, you notice the way light moves differently on water than on land, the way colour becomes colour only when it is reflected. You notice that you are slowing down. Your heart rate actually drops. I have no data on this. I only know it from watching people sit in Srinagar until they stop fidgeting. On the fourth day, we drove to Pampore — one hour south of Srinagar, a plain where nearly all of India's saffron is grown. Not the most famous saffron. Not the best saffron by reputation. But the saffron, because there is nowhere else it grows at scale. The guests did not expect this. They expected perhaps a visit to a spice market, a cursory education. Instead, we stopped at a field in October, after the harvest. The field was empty save for two old men and their grandsons, who were beginning to prepare the soil for the next season. The old men sat down and talked to my guests about their lives. One of them had been a guide for Shaheem's father, forty years ago. This was not arranged. We simply stopped where we knew someone who might be friendly, and someone was. Then Kashmir — the actual Kashmir, not the valley but the mountains. Three days in Aharbal, a village you have not heard of, staying with a family who keeps five rooms for guests and a kitchen where the grandmother makes dishes that exist nowhere else. There is no itinerary here, not formally. You walk in the morning. You sit by the river in the afternoon. You eat what is cooked. You sleep. The guests reported that they did not reach for their phones until the afternoon of the third day. From Kashmir, across the Zoji La into Ladakh. The pass is 3,500 metres. The moment you cross it, the landscape becomes alien — nothing green, nothing soft. Only rock and light and the absolute clarity that you are very high up. We stayed in Leh for five days. Not tourist Leh, but the old town, the quarters where the artists and monks live. The guests walked every morning, ate in small rooms, and on the third evening, they asked if we could stay longer. We could, and we did. There is no schedule. The schedule is internal — when you stop wanting to leave. From Leh, down to Hanle — a town at 4,250 metres, the highest inhabited place in the range. The Changpa herders come here in winter. The Tibetan astronomy facility is here, the highest telescope in the world. We arrived in the afternoon and the director — an astronomer from Delhi who had given up everything comfortable to work here — invited the guests to come up to the observation room at night. The husband, who had been a physicist before he became a professor of philosophy, stood at the eyepiece for two hours. He did not speak. When he came down, he said something like: "That is what I forgot. That is what academia made me forget." That is not something you can schedule. That is something that happens because you have slowed down enough to be where someone can offer it to you. By this point, the guests had been with us for two weeks. They had asked for two weeks. They asked if they could stay for a third. So we did. Three more days in the Changthang, moving slowly north, walking in the high desert, watching the light change hour by hour. On the last evening, they sat in a small village and watched the sun set for fifty minutes, not speaking. Then they said they were ready to go home. When they left, I asked them what the itinerary had been. They could not describe it as a list. They described it as a feeling — the feeling of being known, of being led not by the places but by the people who lived in the places. They described it as the opposite of tourism, which is the delivery of experiences. It was, they said, the opposite. It was the slow erosion of the boundary between guest and place, until the place began to feel like memory even though they had never been there before. That is what an itinerary actually is. Not a list. A sequence of attention, carefully placed so that your eyes can rest on one thing long enough for it to speak to you. That is all the work is.
