If you want to leave at 5 a.m. to watch the sunrise alone, you do. If you want to skip a site and sit by a stream instead, you sit by the stream. If you want to stay in a village an extra day, you stay. The guide adjusts to your rhythm. A group tour optimises for efficiency — cover the maximum ground, see the maximum sights, keep the bus moving. A private journey optimises for depth — stay until the place speaks to you, move only when ready, skip what does not interest you. If you crave structure and company, a group tour is comfortable. If you find schedules restrictive, private travel is transformative. ## Lodge Access & Meals Group tours stay in tourist hotels with large dining halls and fixed menus. Meals are served at set times. You eat with your group and sometimes with other groups. The food is usually good but standardised — it is designed to offend nobody and excite nobody. Private journeys use smaller heritage hotels, family-run guesthouses, and sometimes direct arrangements with families. Meals are cooked for you, often by the lodge owner or a family member. You eat at the time that suits you. In many cases, the chef accommodates dietary preferences with real care. The difference: in a group tour, the lodge is a logistics node. In a private journey, the lodge is where you meet the place. A family who runs a guesthouse in Aharbal will sit with you at dinner, tell you about their village, introduce you to their children. Good group guides are knowledgeable and professional. But their attention is divided across eight to fifteen people. Private guides work for one party. A private guide remembers that you asked about textiles on day three, so on day seven they arrange a detour to meet a weaver. They know you are cautious about altitude, so they adjust the pace. The best private guides are personalised — they are composing an experience for you specifically. ## Routes & Flexibility Group tours follow fixed routes because they need to service multiple departures and keep costs down. There are ten group tours a week running the "Leh-Nubra-Pangong" loop, all on the same schedule, all hitting the same viewpoints. Private journeys can deviate. If there is a festival in a village on your route and you want to attend, you attend. If a monastery has a ceremony scheduled and you want to witness it, you do.
