What to pack for Ladakh in May, June and July

Ladakh in May, June and July is paradoxical — 25°C at noon and minus four at midnight, dry as a bone but with a single afternoon thunderstorm that ruins any unsealed bag. Here is what to actually pack, divided by what matters most.

What clothes should I bring for Ladakh in June?
Four layers: merino wool baselayer (200 gsm), fleece mid-layer, down jacket (-10°C rated), and a waterproof hardshell. Two pairs of soft-shell hiking trousers, thermal long underwear for the highest-altitude nights.
Do I need a waterproof jacket for Ladakh in summer?
Yes. June and July afternoon thunderstorms in Leh are short but absolute — 20 minutes of rain and sometimes hail. Anything not waterproof gets soaked. A 2.5L+ waterproof shell is essential.
Should I take Diamox before going to Ladakh?
Talk to your doctor. We commonly recommend 125–250 mg of acetazolamide (Diamox) twice a day starting the morning before flying to Leh, continued for the first 48–72 hours. It is the single most effective preventative against acute mountain sickness.
What footwear is best for Ladakh?
Mid-cut waterproof hiking shoes, already broken in. Salomon, Merrell or La Sportiva work well. Don't buy new shoes for the trip — blisters at 4,500 metres are a misery. Add merino hiking socks, three pairs minimum.
Is a pulse oximeter useful for Ladakh?
Yes — a small fingertip pulse oximeter (£15–20) is useful for any Ladakh traveller. Check oxygen saturation morning and evening. If readings drop below 80% for sustained periods, the itinerary may need to be slowed or descended.
