Inside Chamba Camp Thiksey: an honest review of Ladakh's most refined address

Chamba Camp Thiksey sits in a quiet wheat field at the foot of Thiksey Monastery, in the Indus Valley about 19 kilometres from Leh. Twenty-four canvas suites in the Mongolian style — large cream-coloured tents on raised platforms, each one self-contained. We have placed clients here for a decade. Here is what stands up to the brochure, and what does not.

When is Chamba Camp Thiksey open?
Late May to early October, weather permitting. We typically avoid early-season (late May to mid-June) and late-season (late September) bookings for first-time Ladakh visitors — weather is less reliable and the Hunder Bactrian camel rides more limited.
How does Chamba compare to heritage hotels in Leh?
Chamba is meaningfully more expensive but meaningfully different — exclusivity, the Thiksey setting, the canvas-suite-with-copper-bath aesthetic. We pair it with a heritage hotel in Leh (Stok Palace, the Grand Dragon, or Nimmu House) for acclimatisation, then move to Chamba for the centrepiece of the journey.
Will I have reliable connectivity at Chamba?
No. WhatsApp signal at the camp is variable. The camp has a satellite arrangement for emergencies, but it is not built for ongoing professional work. If you must remain connected, this is not your property — we will counsel toward Stok Palace or the Grand Dragon instead.
