The Himalayan Guru composes private journeys around your access
requirements, not against them. This page sets out exactly what we
commit to — on the site you're reading and on the ground in the
Himalaya — and how to ask for what you need.
Last reviewed 13 May 2026. Statement reviewed annually.
What we commit to
Every guest may request a confidential pre-visit access dossier: room floorplans, route gradients, toilet specifications, transfer-vehicle photographs, and altitude profile.
Every guest may speak with a composer by video call before committing — to walk through the journey, ask questions, and confirm that the experience will work for them.
No guest is asked to disclose more than is needed to compose their journey safely. Medical information is held only on the dedicated atelier file and never shared with suppliers without explicit consent.
If we cannot compose a journey that meets your needs honestly, we will tell you that — early — rather than try and fail in the field.
On this website
Standards
The site is built to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA across colour
contrast, keyboard operability, focus management, and assistive-tech
semantics. We test with axe-core in continuous integration and run
Lighthouse before every deploy.
Built-in assistive controls
A floating accessibility panel — bottom-right corner of every page — gives
you:
High-contrast colour mode — flips the warm-paper palette to a pure ink / pure white pairing, every text-to-background ratio at AAA (≥ 7:1).
Adjustable text size in four steps (A · A+ · A++ · A+++ → 1.000 → 1.375). Your choice persists across the site for the duration of your visit.
Read aloud — text-to-speech for every editorial article and the journal, using your device's built-in voice.
Your operating system's speech-to-text dictation works on every form field — press your keyboard microphone or use the system shortcut.
Keyboard and screen-reader users
A "Skip to content" link appears as soon as you press Tab.
Every interactive element has a visible focus ring (2 px Saffron, 2 px offset).
Each region landing renders a screen-reader-only summary with the page's H1 and editorial lede, available before the React bundle mounts.
The interactive atlas has a complete text-list alternative — every pin listed by district, every route described in plain English.
Maps and visual content
The interactive atlas at /atlas/ offers a list-based equivalent for screen-reader users, with text directions between any two points.
All map controls (zoom, pan, layers, fullscreen) are at least 44 × 44 css pixels — minimum WCAG 2.1 SC 2.5.5 target.
Every editorial photo carries descriptive alt-text mapped from our photo manifest; no decorative empty-alt images on Big Nature, Small Humanity slots.
All on-site video carries closed captions; transcripts are available on request.
On the ground
Mobility
Wheelchair Step-free arrivals, lifts where available, roll-in bathrooms with grab rails. Hand-picked properties; we won't suggest anywhere we have not verified ourselves.
Transfers Vehicles with wheelchair-securing space; companion drivers trained for assisted transfers. We can also arrange aviation transfers where road gradients exceed safe limits.
Altitude Low-altitude routings (≤ 2,200 m) available across most regions for guests with cardiac, pulmonary, or other altitude considerations. Slow-acclimatisation itineraries also available where you wish to ascend higher.
Pace Single-stop, slow-pace journeys with consolidated transfers, on request.
Sensory and neurodivergent guests
Quiet hours Pre-arranged quiet protocols at every property and transfer — no in-vehicle radio, advance ringtone disabling, minimal staff entry.
Low-stim rooms Specific rooms identified at each property with reduced visual stimulus, blackout options, and white-noise availability.
Sensory pack On-request comfort kit at arrival: noise-isolating headphones, weighted lap throw, fidget tools, familiar snacks.
Predictability Detailed printable day-by-day schedule with photographs of every location, transfer, and meal — sent before departure for review.
Vision, hearing, and communication
Sign language Indian Sign Language interpreters on call in Srinagar, Leh, and Delhi; international sign-language with sufficient advance notice.
Service animals Service animals welcome in every atelier-vetted property. We coordinate import paperwork where needed.
Captioned video Every video element on this site, and every on-property video we commission, carries closed captions.
Audio descriptions For self-guided audio tours, descriptions follow Royal National Institute of Blind People conventions.
Dietary and medical
Every menu we curate is reviewed against your declared dietary restrictions before arrival; nothing arrives at your table that you have not approved.
We carry a portable pulse-oximeter on every Ladakh and Bhutan journey; properties in Leh, Nimmoo, and Tabo have oxygen on call.
24/7 ground concierge in every region, briefed on your needs before you land.
How to ask for what you need
Tell us as much or as little as you wish on the inquiry form at
/contact. There is a dedicated
access notes field at the bottom — your information is encrypted in
transit and seen only by your dedicated composer.
We reply within two working days with an initial assessment — what we
can compose comfortably, what may need a pre-arrival video call to
work through, and what would not be honest for us to attempt.
Once the journey is composed we send the pre-visit access dossier:
floorplans, route gradients, transfer-vehicle photographs, contact
details for the ground concierge, and the day-by-day schedule with
photographs.
You travel. The ground concierge holds a printed brief of your access
requirements throughout — never shared beyond the team supporting you.
If anything on this site or in your journey does not meet the
commitments above, we want to know — quickly. Write to
hello@thehimalayan.guru
with "Access feedback" in the subject and we will respond within two
working days. If the matter is unresolved, you may also raise it with
the relevant accessibility ombudsman in your home jurisdiction; we will
cooperate with any reasonable enquiry.
